Extension cords are available as flat extension leads, drum extension leads or as stealth extension leads or splitters. Outdoors, it's a good idea to use an extension lead with a flap at the female end - this prevents rain and snow from immediately reaching the extension lead terminals and causing a short circuit. When using stealth cables and extension leads, it is important to consider how much load they can withstand. If the extension lead ignites due to overloading, a fire may start and water must not be used to extinguish it. In many cases, homes and offices need a splitter, or thief socket, which allows two, three or even four consumers to be connected to one wall outlet. Here again, common sense must guide us and we must avoid overloading the electricity system.
