Lihtsamalt öeldes on vinüülplaadid pöörlevad plaadid, mida kasutatakse muusika salvestamiseks. Nendel analoogmuusika salvestusseadmetel on moduleeritud spiraalsed sooned, mis varieeruvad sõltuvalt kiiratavatest helilainetest. Algselt nimetati vinüülplaate fonograafideks, grammofoniplaatideks või lihtsalt plaatideks ning need valmistati vaigust, mida kutsuti šellakiks. Alles 20. sajandi keskpaigas, kui nende plaatide valmistamiseks kasutati polüvinüülkloriidi (PVC), sai nimetus "vinüülplaadid" populaarseks. Mängijaid, mida tavaliselt nimetatakse grammofonilaudadeks, fonograafideks või grammofonideks, kasutatakse nende esitamiseks ja salvestamiseks. Fonograafilised salvestised on olnud kaubanduslik viis muusika salvestamiseks ja esitamiseks alates 19. sajandi algusest. 1991. aasta paiku hakkas aga CD-plaatide (CD-de) populaarsus kasvama ja salvestusturg kahanes väiksemate partiide tootmiseks. Tänapäeval on aga vinüülplaatide taaselus. Vinüülplaatide populaarsus ja müük on märkimisväärselt kasvanud eelkõige muusikahuviliste ja kollektsionääride seas. Alates 2017. aastast on maailmas vaid 48 tehast, seega peetakse vinüülplaate tänapäeval väärtuslikuks antiikesemeks.
